Message from the Chief Adviser
Welcome to the Autumn term 2009 edition of the Assessment for Learning e-bulletin, which sees us enter the second year of the AfL Strategy. Assessment for Learning (AfL) has continued to be a hot topic throughout this year, with a strong endorsement of AfL by the Expert Group on Assessment in its recommendations; and Sir Jim Rose's final report on the Independent Review of the Primary Curriculum also making links to the use of AfL.
The 21st Century School White Paper has additionally set out its expectation that all pupils are taught in a way that meets their needs, where progress is regularly checked. The White Paper also advocates school-to-school learning, and the Lead Assessment School Model has this concept at its core. This model began rolling out this term – where schools already confident in their use of AfL share their expertise with others at earlier phases of implementation.
If there are any particular issues or questions you would like to see addressed in future editions of this newsletter, please do let us know.

The National Strategies 12.45 pm, 26th January 2010
Dear Ms Loy,
Thank you or your query about the funding for year 3 of the AfL Strategy.
As in the first two years of the Strategy, there is £50 million available for continuing professional development for teachers in Assessment for Learning (AfL).
The National Strategies 12.58 pm, 26th January 2010
All schools will receive a universal offer of £1000 plus some funding on a per pupil basis. As in previous years, the AfL offer is wider than funding and includes support through the Lead Assessment School model in addition to training from the LA and the National Strategies.
The National Strategies 12.59 pm, 26th January 2010
The DCSF is working with the National Strategies, Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) and the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (CIEA) to provide a universal offer of support and training for AfL, teacher assessment and tracking.
Further guidance will be available for Local Authorities shortly.
