Primary Framework for literacy: Text types

Support for Writing includes guidance on the features of narrative, non-fiction and poetry text types. This new material builds on and extends previous guidance in Grammar for Writing and the progression papers.

The additional detail and new elements are intended to support planning for progression by allowing teachers to link their own planning with the information pathways through the Primary Framework. Each text type category provides direct links to the relevant units for each year group in the PFW.

For each text-type, information is provided on purpose, generic structures, language features and knowledge for the writer. The guidance also includes additional information on range and overlap between text types.

The Narrative text type guidance contains an additional layer of guidance for traditional tales. The generic features of this text type (purpose, generic structures, language features and knowledge for the writer) are previewed in the main narrative grid, but a second level of detail for myths, legends, fairy tales and fables is available in the 'more specific features' chapters.
