Talk for Writing

About Talk for Writing

Talk for Writing is a way of supporting the improvement of children's writing.

It develops their ability to 'read as writers' and enables them to explore the thinking and creative processes involved in generating and planning ideas and incorporating techniques learned from other writers into their own work.

It further allows children to rehearse the structure and sequence of a piece of writing and guides how the text should sound - its style and voice. It also encourages them to generate and rehearse appropriate language and grammar as they work collaboratively to plan, draft and improve their writing.

Aim:

The aim of this web area is to provide a set of resources that allow those leading continuing professional development (CPD) to create learning paths to meet the needs of different audiences.

It is expected that presenters will already be familiar with Talk for writing approaches when they lead the sessions.

Learning objectives:

The objectives of the learning events, which these resources will be used to support, are for learners to:

  • understand that effective writers have an ongoing internal dialogue which shapes their writing and that children need this process made explicit through talk
  • be able to plan for the appropriate balance of teacher modelling, supported talk and independent talk within whole-class and guided sessions
  • recognise that Talk for Writing is necessary at each stage of the teaching sequence and develop lesson plans to support this
  • be able to integrate the Talk for Writing approach into planning and teaching of the primary literacy frameworks for their year group
  • be aware of the need to incorporate the learning requirements of the inclusion programmes and Assessment for Learning (AfL) in planning for Talk for Writing.
