Download publicationThis book provides primary school teachers with samples that can be used in the daily mathematics lesson. It can be incorporated into the national numeracy strategy.
The book contains descriptions of five lessons for each year from reception to year six, and three lessons for year seven. The introduction explains the layout of lessons and gives advice on how to prepare pupils to know what to expect from the numeracy lessons. An introduction to each section lists main objectives and teaching strategies, broken down into activity by the whole class, individual work, or pairs. It also identifies key mathematical ideas and methods and offers guidelines on structuring the class and allotting times to each section of the lesson.
Each set of lessons forms a coherent sequence showing a progression in skills and understanding, and the book aims to provide a useful model for how to develop a theme for the class. However, it does not provide lessons on every topic for all age groups.
