Download publicationThis document is aimed at all teachers and headteachers working with children in Reception, this booklet provides guidance on the organisation and management of the daily mathematics lesson.
This publication builds on the information provided in the ‘How can we work in Reception?’ section in the Introduction to the Framework for teaching mathematics: Reception to Year 6 (DfES NNFT), the document considers progress towards Year 1 organisation.
Acknowledging the mixed experience, age and understanding of children in reception, this booklet reinforces and enhances the guidance in the Framework and explores the role of the reception teacher, and the expectations placed upon the pupil.
The document also outlines strategies and activities useful within the daily mathematics lesson at different times of the school year – from the very beginning, right up until the transition into Year 1. In conjunction with some of the sample lessons for Reception found in More numeracy lessons (DfES 0599 2001), it provides clear guidance for all teaching staff working with this age range.
