EYFS Inclusion Development Programme (IDP): Supporting children on the autism spectrum

This e-learning course – part of the Inclusion Development Programme (IDP) – will support practitioners in meeting the needs of young children on the autism spectrum. The content of the e-learning and accompanying booklet should be used as the basis of continuous professional development (CPD). Although this course can be used for individual CPD, it is helpful to work through the materials as a group and share experiences with other early years practitioners. LA consultants, Early Years Advisory Teachers (EYATs) or area special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) will find these materials useful as part of the LA training and support for inclusion. The materials will also be a valuable resource for trainers providing initial early years and childcare qualifications.

Following an introduction to autism, the modules explore autism provision informed by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) principles:

  1. Introduction
  2. A Unique Child
  3. Positive Relationships
  4. Enabling Environments
  5. Learning and Development

Learning outcomes

  • Define possible early signs of autism.
  • Recognise the triad of impairments.
  • Identify how different aspects of autism may affect children's learning.
  • List ways in which support could be provided for children on the autism spectrum which could remove barriers to learning and socialisation.
  • Demonstrate ways in which parents' and children's voices can support planning provision.
  • Be aware of current terminology and the accompanying debate around autism and Asperger's syndrome.

This is most frustrating. I spent time at the end of the school day trying to help a colleague access this site. I have now wasted time this evening. All I would like to do is support staff in accessing online resources. Life is too short and the pressures are too great!
