These materials focus on speaking, listening and learning and were the result of a two-year partnership between QCA and the National Literacy Strategy. They reflect the National Curriculum requirements in literacy and develop approaches to teaching, extending and reinforcing speaking and listening both in literacy and across the curriculum.

The handbook offers guidance to teachers wishing to implement the suggested teaching sequences or developing their own alternatives. This process needs to be supported and monitored in a range of ways, such as in-class support, logging successes and issues for discussion, and agreeing a whole-school approach to identifying the time to teach speaking and listening.

Sections in the handbook include:

  • What is distinctive about speaking and listening?
  • Speaking and listening in all areas of the curriculum
  • Making it work in the classroom
  • Progression in speaking and listening
  • Assessing speaking and listening
