Download publicationThis pack supports primary, secondary and middle schools in guiding pupils through the transition from primary to secondary mathematics. It is designed for heads of mathematics departments and teachers of Year 6 and 7, explains the thinking behind the change and provides them with practical materials to use in the mathematics transition units.
In particular, the aim of the unit is to help ensure consistency during the transition and avoid repetition of course content, to allow pupils to show what they know and to give teachers better information about their new charges’ strengths and weaknesses.
The pack contains:
- Units of work on calculation and problem solving, which contain a set of five lessons for the end of Year 6 and a set of five lessons for the beginning of Year 7.
- Securing improvement: The role of subject leaders, which focuses on the role of the Key Stage 3 subject leader in securing and sustaining improvement in each subject of the curriculum.
- Designing the Key Stage 3 curriculum, which offers advice and practical suggestions to senior and subject leaders on how schools might design and timetable the curriculum at Key Stage 3 to achieve a balanced curriculum and tailor the curriculum to the needs of their pupils and the communities they serve.
- Managing the second year, which gives advice based on experiences of implementing the Secondary Strategy. It looks ahead to what might be needed to embed the Strategy in the everyday life of the school and offers information, advice and practical suggestions.
