Mental calculation

This CPD theme is aimed specifically at schools who wish to address progression in mental calculation with a focus on reasoning and mathematical language.

It is relevant for the whole primary age-range, drawing specifically on examples within Years 1, 3 and 5.

The materials have been designed to support teachers and practitioners in developing mental and informal calculation. They incorporate the use of practical resources, models and images and their role in developing understanding of calculation strategies. They provide advice and guidance on progression in the teaching of calculation and explore different teaching approaches.

The CPD materials are organised into two sections:

  • CPD outlines - which contains the overview of CPD guidance/ notes for Local Authorities and schools on mental calculation. This section also contains the outline for a school-based Professional Development Meeting linked to the CPD and notes to support in-school collaborative activity
  • Handouts and resources - which contains any related materials or linked handouts from the PDM outline needed to run the PDM including the presentation.
