Introduction
Modelling is a key element within the National Curriculum programme of study for ICT (link opens in new window). Pupils need opportunities throughout Key Stages 3 and 4 to learn how to develop, amend, design and create models. Such opportunities need to be planned for and taught in an engaging way if pupils are to make the necessary progress.
This resource is designed to provide teachers of ICT with a greater understanding of how pupils can be taught the processes and technical demands of developing models and modelling.
The materials are arranged in two chapters. It is helpful to work through these in order. However, if you already have some understanding in this area, choose a chapter to find materials relevant to your needs.
Chapter 2: Understanding models and modelling
This section consists of three activities which will enable you to:
- understand what computer-based models are
- understand the importance of the system life cycle in designing models
- develop the technical knowledge to build your own computer-based models.
Chapter 3: Models and modelling in the classroom
This section consists of three activities which will enable you to:
- understand pupil progression in models and modelling
- try to apply your understanding to create your models
- plan to develop pupil understanding of models and modelling effectively.
Whether you are an experienced subject leader, an NQT, or just new to teaching ICT, you will find this resource an invaluable aid to better classroom practice.
