Springboard 5 is designed for children in groups of 8–12 who need help to reach level 4 at the end of Key Stage 2 mathematics. It consists of 10 weekly units of work, preferably for use in the autumn and spring terms. This will ensure that they are adequately prepared for the work they will face in Year 6.
The main aims are to:
There is a 50-minute lead lesson and a 45-minute follow-up session. This second lesson is to consolidate the work and, sometimes, take it a small step further.
Each unit has a detailed lesson plan for both the lead lesson and the follow-up session with a teaching assistant. Teaching objectives, vocabulary and resources are listed, as well as teaching points and key questions.
Three photocopiable activity sheets are provided for each weekly unit of work. There is also a short weekly homework task to be completed between the lead lesson and the follow-up session.
Also included are video sequences showing how the material to be taught could be broken down into small steps. Appropriate lines of questioning are demonstrated. The content is similar to that of the lead lessons but has been amended, where necessary, to meet the specific needs of the children being filmed.
There is also advice aimed at explicitly at the teaching assistants and a full list of all the unit objectives. The final, and largest, section consists of varied teaching materials for each unit.
