Year 7 Wave 3 resource - Mathematics challenge
Mathematics challenge has been developed as a Wave 3 resource to provide targeted one to one support to help those Year 7 pupils currently achieving Level 3 in mathematics who, with a little extra help, are capable of attaining a Level 4. This help is provided by coaches, mentors, parents and senior pupils. A coach may support an individual pupil or a group of two or three pupils, all of whom are working to the same target.
Some pupils working at Level 4 may also benefit from parts of the programme to address particular weaknesses.
Task
Think about how these two challenges could be used with your current Year 7 pupils.
You may wish to download the Mathematics challenge (see Related links).
The approach is the same in all of the ten challenges, with a statement of the objective; the current understanding, common errors and then what to do. The latter section has a staged progression to support the coach who is not normally a specialist mathematics teacher.
The Mathematics challenge pack consists of:
- information for the school organiser
- a summary for the school strategy manager and information for Year 7 mathematics teachers
- advice for coaches
- a video showing coaches using the materials: useful with teaching assistants and coaches in your school
- support units and resources.
The programme, as with all Wave 3 provision, needs managing and as Leading Intervention Teacher you may feel that you will wish to coordinate the work. The School Intervention Manager needs to have an overview of the school's overall intervention programme. Read the attached information for the school organiser for more detail on possible approaches.
There are many examples of these resources being used by additional adults and by pupils in Years 10 and 12, working with Year 7 pupils during extra time for tightly focused targeted intervention.
