This short document is for primary school teachers taking year six classes. It aims to provide advice in two areas: how to balance priorities in teaching English and mathematics and how to prepare children for the key stage 2 national tests, which mark the transition from primary to secondary education.
For the first topic, the guide provides bullet-point tips for teachers on helping children in the key skills of literacy and numeracy, namely to think on their feet and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar questions. For the second, it provides advice on how to prepare pupils to work under time constraints, develop strategies, navigate the test format and develop confidence in their own knowledge and skills.
For additional reading, teachers are referred to a series of leaflets produced by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), Implications for teaching and learning (November 2001).
