Literacy Progress Units (adapted for whole-class use)
The Literacy Progress Units have been written primarily for use with small groups of pupils. This is the recommended arrangement for delivery of the LPU programme.
However, this arrangement may prove impractical in some schools where large numbers of pupils are achieving under level 4. The LPU units have therefore been adapted slightly for use in whole class teaching situations.
The most significant changes have been made to the Spelling unit where the original eighteen 20-minute sessions have been altered to create forty-two 10-minute sessions.
The information on seating arrangements in the original units has been included because it reflects the philosophy behind the small-group approach. It is therefore relevant for teachers planning whole-class use. In the class context the principle of maximum visual access is even more important, and face-to-face contact remains essential.
The Phonics unit is not currently available in adapted form.
