Multiples problem

Darren's mathematics sample: Multiples problem

Teacher's notes
  • copies the teacher's statement and gives a prediction
  • records his results on a table with headings
  • is able to identify multiples of 2 and 4
  • records thinking in notes on his sheet, for example 4 + 8 = 12 = even/true
  • makes a statement about the information on his table.
Next steps
  • share examples as a class
  • check that the outcome is always an even number
  • discuss any other patterns that they notice.

Logic problem to find the values of different shapes in a 4×4 square

Darren's mathematics sample: Logic problem – values of shapes in a 4×4 square

Teacher's notes
  • calculates mentally using all four operations with single-digit integers
  • perseveres when his first attempts don't work
  • follows through to complete the code.
Next steps
  • work with a partner to compare solutions.

What the teacher knows about Darren's attainment in Ma1

Darren finds different ways to approach a problem in order to overcome difficulties. He often uses classroom discussions to break into a problem, annotate the diagram, check answers and explain strategies. He is developing his use of numerical skills and knowledge to solve problems. He is beginning to organise and to discuss his mathematical work, and is starting to explain his thinking, using appropriate mathematical vocabulary. He is beginning to look for patterns as he works and can make generalisations with the assistance of probing questions and prompts.

Summarising Darren's attainment in Ma1

In Ma1 Darren is best described as working at the middle of level 3. For further progress within the level and to move into level 4, he needs to start developing his own strategies for engaging with a problem, to have more opportunities for working systematically, to check his work, and to compare his solutions with those of other children.
