Year 6 Literacy Planning
Literacy planning is organised into three main blocks: narrative (plays and scripts), non-fiction and poetry. These blocks are further divided into suggested units of learning and teaching. The narrative, non fiction and poetry blocks provide support for planning and teaching for literacy across the year. The number of units varies from year group to year group.
Narrative
The promotion of children's understanding of narrative texts, and opportunities to create them, are core aspects of children's literacy development. Importantly, the narrative units within the renewed Framework encompass both paper and on-screen texts and are intended to cover the full range of texts envisaged within the National Curriculum for English.
Non-fiction
The development of children's understanding of non-fiction texts, and their ability to create them for a range of audiences and purposes, are vital components of children's literacy learning. Importantly, the non-fiction units within the renewed Framework encompass both paper and on-screen texts and are intended to cover the full range of texts envisaged within the National Curriculum for English.
Poetry
Exposure to, and opportunities to engage with, poetry are core aspects of children's literacy development. Importantly, the poetry units within the renewed Framework encompass both paper and on-screen texts and are intended to cover the full range of texts envisaged within the National Curriculum for English.
