Progression maps for English
How do I use them?
First
Consider what you know about your target pupil or group of similar pupils as readers and writers. Select the Progression maps: Reading or Progression maps: Writing related link and look for the headline that describes them best. Let's say your pupils sound like 'competent readers'. Now decide whether you think they have just arrived at that point on the map or whether they are well established there. If they are well established, select the 'secure competent reader' link. This will take you to a fuller description of the secure competent reader.
Next
Check whether the fuller description fits. In many cases you can also look at some pupil work for comparison. From here you can go back and see if another category is a better fit or, if satisfied, access advice on the relevant pupil targets.
Finally
There is teaching advice directly linked to the targets for the 'secure competent reader' and from here you can also select links to other helpful materials or choose to view sample plans for a lesson sequence.
