About the Zone

Paul Andrew, mathematics advisor for the Thetford Education Action Zone, describes how the schools in Thetford, Norfolk LEA, used problem solving mornings to aid transition between schools.

The Thetford Education Action Zone has four first schools, two primary schools, three junior schools and two high schools. The mathematics co-ordinators from the schools meet regularly and work closely together. They have developed a target setting package and have now planned this transition initiative. The target-setting package broke down the NNS key objectives down into smaller chunks and put them in 'childspeak' form. The children or groups of children are set targets using these and are involved in their assessment. The target setting package covers from Reception to Year 9.
